| Translation | he says that the least wise and the least brave often raise the battle cry before the battle begins, but this should not happen, because blows should accompany the battle cry. The ancients took great care in arranging their battle lines, so that the men-at-arms should not be frightened by the cries raised by peasants when they see the army assemble, or made by those who are afraid, so they will warn them of these by a certain trumpet call. Also, those who are inexperienced often fear all this, and so, says the book, they should be engaged in other matters rather than arms. |
