| Translation | Likewise, it sometimes happens that those of the besieging army pretend as a trick that they are leaving, and even go away, as did once those of Greece before Troy after a pretended peace. Later, wehen they think that those within feel confident and are making little effort to maintain a watch or be on their guard, then, silently by night or secretly, they return, and scale the wall where the guard, tired of keeping watch, is merely passing the time; and now the defenders are found asleep, thinking they are safe, and the invader suddenly surprises them and kills them all. By this deceit have many cities and towns been captured, as was the great Troy. Likewise, Rome would have been taken the time that Hannibal, prince of Carthage, was before the city, had not the cry of the geese, as it happened, awakened the guards. […] In ancients times it was the custom to raise very fierce and brital dogs in these buildings and in the towers, by whom the arrival of enemies could be sensed. |
