| Translation | Likewise, Chares, Athenian commander, was established in the field with few men, but he was expecting reinforcements. He feared that his enemies, of whom there were a great number, might attack him because they knew of his weakness. In order to avoid such a consequence, he sent out a large part of his troops by night with the order that the next morning they should return, coming down the slope of a mountain making a great deal of noise so that the enemy could see them and thus believe it was a reinforcement. So it came about that through this deception they remained safe until help arrived. |
